Specifications of a double girder crane

EOT Crane manufacturer

Cranes are one of the most important equipment of industries and make the life of the workers easy by lifting heavy loads which are not possible otherwise manually. There are different types of cranes used in different work floors and it totally depends on the type of load which one wants to lift. Gantry Crane Manufacturer in India manufacture cranes of different lifting capacities and sizes and based on the requirement, industries purchase them. Depending upon the usage, there are majorly two types of cranes used in industries namely Single Girder Bridge cranes and Double Girder Bridge cranes and in this article, we will be talking about the second one that is Double Girder Bridge cranes in detail.

Double Girder cranes

Double Girder Bridge cranes have two bridge beams and the hoist trolley travels on rails. The rails in these cranes are usually attached to the tops of the girder of the crane and they are of two types namely Top-running or under-running double-girder cranes The maximum overhead space and hook height are provided in a top-running double girder bridge crane.

Cranes with two girders are suggested for heavy-duty applications requiring higher capacity and longer spans. As a result, the crane system’s components, such as the hoist and trolley, are more complicated to design, making double girder cranes more expensive than single girder cranes.

They also necessitate additional material for the bridge beams and runway system, therefore the building’s support structure should be given special attention.

To accommodate the increased deadweight on the supports or building foundation, more tie-backs or support columns may be required.

Bridge cranes with double girders are good for lifting high loads and may be used more frequently than single girder cranes.

Application of a double girder crane

Double girder cranes are better suited to higher duty classes and unique applications such as die flipping and double hoisting systems. Large control panels for specific purposes may be readily accommodated on the optional service platforms of a double girder crane. Die flipping with two hoists necessitates the installation of hoisting drums parallel to the crane runways. A double girder crane is an ideal tool for the job.

Top qualities of Double girder cranes

A double girder crane has many qualities which is why it is used in many industries. Some of them are listed below

  • Greater hook height – how high the hoist can elevate the hook above the floor (usually 18-36″ higher than single girder) There are no boundaries to the largest span or capacity, making it ideal for heavy equipment manufacture and transportation.
  • Ideal for carrying hefty weights on a regular basis.
  • A double girder design can support additional features like walkways and maintenance platforms, cabs, magnetic reels, and lighting.
  • Mining, iron and steel, train yards, and ports are just a few examples of indoor and outdoor uses of double girder cranes

Limitations of Double Girder cranes

While there are many qualities, there are certain limitations as well to the double girder cranes which are listed below

  • The added material cost makes double girder cranes more expensive. As compared to single girder cranes, double girder cranes have more complex components making them costly. Additional structural support provided in double girder cranes are other reasons for them being expensive.
  • As compared to single girder cranes, double girder cranes incur costs related to freight and installation which again makes them costly which is the reason not all industries could afford them
  • On double girder top running cranes, for both trolley travel and bridge travel, hook approach is lessened.
